DIY: Make your own terrarium in 6 easy steps!

Are you ready to create your own green mini world? With a DIY terrarium you can bring a piece of nature into your home, without needing green fingers! Follow these simple steps and make your own easy-care terrarium.

What do you need?

Before you start, make sure you have all the materials ready:
Glass jar or vase (with or without lid)
Drainage layer (e.g. hydro granules or gravel)
Activated charcoal (for a healthy ecosystem)
Potting soil (suited to the plants you choose)
Plants (e.g. moss, ferns, Fittonia or succulents)
Decoration (stones, wood or figures)
Spoon or tweezers (for placing plants)

Step 1: Choose the right pot

The basis of your terrarium is a glass jar or vase. A closed terrarium is ideal for moisture-loving plants such as ferns and moss, while an open terrarium works better for succulents and cacti.

Step 2: Create the drainage layer

Start with a layer of hydro granules or gravel on the bottom. This ensures that excess water is drained and prevents root rot.

Step 3: Add charcoal

Sprinkle a thin layer of active charcoal over the stones. This helps prevent mold and unpleasant odors and keeps your terrarium fresh for longer.

Step 4: Apply the potting soil

Add a layer of potting soil that is suitable for your plants. Use a spoon or your hands to spread the soil evenly.

Step 5: Place your plants

Make small holes in the soil and carefully place your plants. Use tweezers or spoon to put them in the right place. Press the soil gently around the roots.

Step 6: Add decorations

Complete your terrarium with decorative stones, wood or figures. This gives a unique, personal touch to your mini ecosystem!

Maintenance tips

🌿 Closed terrarium? Air and spray occasionally if necessary.
🌵 Open terrarium? Water lightly and place in a bright spot without direct sunlight.
👀 Do you see condensation? Then leave your terrarium open for a while to ventilate.
